At least 1000 villagers in Chipinge district have received hybrid goats under the Presidential Goat Scheme program that seeks to secure the livelihoods of smallholder farmers and mitigate climate change shocks. In an interview, Chipinge District Livestock Specialist John Mwandifura said each chief has been allocated three bucks, two for each headman, and one for every village head while the female goats have been distributed to the villages for breeding purposes. Goat production has been identified as one of the key climate-proofed livestock production systems as given in the Livestock Growth Plan and the program will eventually see more than 600 000 goats being distributed to the small-scale sector.
