Makoni district is leading in the production of irrigated tobacco in Manicaland with more hectarage of the golden leaf which has become the main cash crop in the area. In an interview, Zimbabwe Farmers Union (ZFU) Manicaland agronomist specializing in tobacco and horticulture, Mr Douglas Nzarayebani said of the districts with irrigated tobacco this season, Chimanimani and Buhera reported the lowest hectarage due to unfavorable weather conditions and electricity challenges in these areas. Tobacco farming has become one of the most beneficial ventures in the province, enhancing the livelihoods of many rural households.
