Livestock farmers in Chimanimani district have adopted the Supplementary Cattle Feeding Program as part of drought mitigation response strategies to alleviate cattle deaths during dry seasons. District Agritex Officer Pasipanodya Chiturike said they are assisting farmers to formulate their on-farm feeds through urea treatment of low-quality roughages such as maize stover, silage and commercial feeds as cattle pastures decrease during this time of season. The country’s drive to eliminate poverty deaths among cattle is gaining traction with the Government set to roll out a Forage Bank Programme meant to provide a supplementary diet for cattle and enhance livestock production.
