At least 1000 families in Chisumbanje are benefitting from the small-scale irrigation project being spearheaded by Zimbabwe's largest ethanol producer Greenfuel. In an interview, Greenfuel Public Relations Manager Ms Merit Rumema said while crops such as maize and beans are dominant in most of the irrigable land, farmers should also grow horticultural crops for subsistence and commercial purposes. She further highlighted that farmers are still facing challenges in transporting their produce to bigger markets, which eventually forces them to end up selling through local middlemen at low prices.
Last year the Company developed an additional 900 hectares from which 10% was allocated to the Chisumbanje community.
