A good harvest of the early planted winter wheat in Middle Sabi which is now in its reproductive stage is under threat as the crop is under attack from Quelea birds. Middle Sabi Farmers’ Chairperson Skhumbuzo Thondlana said, they have engaged the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management to fight the huge flocks of the birds to curb losses by farmers at a time winter wheat production trebled this year in their area. Quelea birds have been a threat to summer subsistence small grains and commercial winter cereal cropping in Zimbabwe for years and the country has imported chemicals to save the crop that is estimated to produce 300 000 tonnes this season.
