Reaping and curing of irrigated tobacco in Makoni District is in progress with over 200 commercial farmers having planted the crop in the area. District Agritex officer Joseph Chipere said that quality of the irrigated crop improved this year as compared to same period last year due to adequate water supply with farmers under rain-fed tobacco still tending to the crop as they prepare for the marketing season. Tobacco is Zimbabwe's biggest export crop and the country's second largest export earner after gold as it earns the country US$1 billion annually.
