Tobacco farmers in Manicaland have been urged to grow gumtree woodlots and adopt to use of sawdust to cure the gold leaf amid growing concerns over deforestation. A local tobacco agronomist Itai Mazhangara encouraged local farmers to adopt the alternatives to save indigenous trees, further highlighting that the tobacco farming sector is also slowly shifting back to use of coal. The forestry commission is on record pledging to heighten its fight against continuous cutting down of indigenous tress in the province, saying offenders will serve time.
