The Environmental Management Agency says illegal mining in Manicaland where primitive extractive methods are being used pose great threat to the environment, as the activities have contributed to 42% of veld fires recorded in the province this year. EMA Education and Publicity Officer Alice Chivese Rutsvara said the miners in Penhalonga and other parts of the district use fire to clear land among other practices that pose danger not only the environment but the society at large. She further said alluvial mining was banned last year saying small scale miners have no capacity to rehabilitate rivers in which they will be operating.
