Teachers capitalize on CALA

Parents in Mutare have raised concern over costs they are incurring due to the Continuous Assessment Learning Activity (CALA), an assessment tool for the competence-based curriculum being implemented in schools by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education. While most parents say the system is important for the education of their children, they said most schools are not well resourced to implement the system. Meanwhile Manicaland Provincial Education Director Mr Edward Shumba urged parents to report teachers capitalizing on the CALA system to embark on corrupt dealings, further warning teachers to remain professional in discharge of their duties. His sentiments follow revelations that some teachers are doing the projects on behalf of learners in exchange for payment.
